The area between a graph and the x-axis

The area between a graph and the x-axis

Above the axis and below it

An area is always positive, but the integral of a negative function is negative. So:

S=∫abf(x) dx\displaystyle S=\int_{a}^{b}f(x)\,dxf(x)≥0\displaystyle f(x)\geq0
S=−∫abf(x) dx\displaystyle S=-\int_{a}^{b}f(x)\,dxf(x)≤0\displaystyle f(x)\leq0
  • When the function changes sign in the interval, find its zeros, split the interval at them, and add the areas of the parts.
  • One integral over the whole interval gives the difference between the area above the axis and the area below it – not the area.
A function that changes sign

The example below calculates the area between the graph of f(x)=x2−1\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^2-1} and the x\displaystyle x-axis, for 0≤x≤2\displaystyle 0\le x\le2:

f(x)=x2−1\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}-1
  • The zero in the interval: x=1\displaystyle {x}={1}. Between 0 and 1 the graph is below the axis, and between 1 and 2 above it.
  • ∫01(x2−1)dx=[x33−x]01=−23\displaystyle {\int_0^1\left(x^2-1\right)dx}={\left[\frac{x^3}{3}-x\right]_0^1}={-\frac{2}{3}}: the area is 23\displaystyle \frac{2}{3}.
  • ∫12(x2−1)dx=(83−2)−(13−1)=43\displaystyle {\int_1^2\left(x^2-1\right)dx}={\left(\frac{8}{3}-2\right)-\left(\frac{1}{3}-1\right)}={\frac{4}{3}}.
  • The whole area: 23+43=2\displaystyle {\frac{2}{3}+\frac{4}{3}}={2}. (One integral from 0 to 2 would give −23+43=23\displaystyle {-\frac{2}{3}+\frac{4}{3}}={\frac{2}{3}}.)
An enclosed area

“The area enclosed by the graph and the x\displaystyle x-axis” is the area between two neighbouring zeros – the limits are not given, so find them. In the example below f(x)=3x−x2\displaystyle {f(x)}={3x-x^2}:

  • The zeros: 3x−x2=0\displaystyle {3x-x^2}={0}, that is x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} or x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}.
  • Between 0 and 3 the graph is above the axis: S=∫03(3x−x2)dx=[3x22−x33]03=272−9=92\displaystyle {S}={\int_0^3\left(3x-x^2\right)dx}={\left[\frac{3x^2}{2}-\frac{x^3}{3}\right]_0^3}={\frac{27}{2}-9}={\frac{9}{2}}.
f(x)=3x−x2\displaystyle f(x)=3x-x^{2}
