The integral of a composite function with a linear inner function

The integral of a composite function with a linear inner function

The rule

In grade 10 you learnt the chain rule: (F(mx+b))′=F′(mx+b)⋅m=m⋅f(mx+b)\displaystyle {\left(F(mx+b)\right)'}={F'(mx+b)\cdot m}={m\cdot f(mx+b)}. The inner derivative m\displaystyle m is a number, so to get f(mx+b)\displaystyle f(mx+b) without the m\displaystyle m, divide by m\displaystyle m:

∫f(mx+b) dx=1mF(mx+b)+C\displaystyle \int f(mx+b)\,dx=\frac{1}{m}F(mx+b)+Cm≠0\displaystyle m\neq0
  • F\displaystyle F is an antiderivative of f\displaystyle f.
  • That is: find the integral as if mx+b\displaystyle mx+b were x\displaystyle x, and divide by the coefficient of x\displaystyle x.
A power, a root and a fraction

In the examples below the inner function is linear, and the rule gives the integral:

  • ∫(3x−1)4 dx\displaystyle \int(3x-1)^4\,dx: the integral of u4\displaystyle u^4 is u55\displaystyle \frac{u^5}{5}, and m=3\displaystyle {m}={3}:
∫(3x−1)4 dx=13⋅(3x−1)55+C=(3x−1)515+C\int(3x-1)^4\,dx=\frac{1}{3}\cdot\frac{(3x-1)^5}{5}+C=\frac{(3x-1)^5}{15}+C
  • ∫2x+1 dx\displaystyle \int\sqrt{2x+1}\,dx: the integral of u\displaystyle \sqrt{u} is 23uu\displaystyle \frac{2}{3}u\sqrt{u}, and m=2\displaystyle {m}={2}:
∫2x+1 dx=12⋅23(2x+1)2x+1+C=(2x+1)2x+13+C\int\sqrt{2x+1}\,dx=\frac{1}{2}\cdot\frac{2}{3}(2x+1)\sqrt{2x+1}+C=\frac{(2x+1)\sqrt{2x+1}}{3}+C
  • ∫1(5−x)2 dx\displaystyle \int\frac{1}{(5-x)^2}\,dx: the integral of 1u2\displaystyle \frac{1}{u^2} is −1u\displaystyle -\frac{1}{u}, and m=−1\displaystyle {m}={-1}:
∫1(5−x)2 dx=1−1⋅(−15−x)+C=15−x+C\int\frac{1}{(5-x)^2}\,dx=\frac{1}{-1}\cdot\left(-\frac{1}{5-x}\right)+C=\frac{1}{5-x}+C
  • The check, for the first one say: ((3x−1)515)′=5(3x−1)4⋅315=(3x−1)4\displaystyle {\left(\frac{(3x-1)^5}{15}\right)'}={\frac{5(3x-1)^4\cdot3}{15}}={(3x-1)^4}.
A definite integral

The example below calculates ∫01(2x+1)3 dx\displaystyle \int_0^1(2x+1)^3\,dx by the same rule, and puts the limits into the antiderivative:

∫01(2x+1)3 dx=[(2x+1)48]01=818−18=10\int_0^1(2x+1)^3\,dx=\left[\frac{(2x+1)^4}{8}\right]_0^1=\frac{81}{8}-\frac{1}{8}=10
An inner function that is not linear

The rule holds only when the inner function is linear. For ∫(x2+1)2 dx\displaystyle \int(x^2+1)^2\,dx the “rule” gives (x2+1)33⋅2x\displaystyle \frac{(x^2+1)^3}{3\cdot2x}, but the derivative of that expression is not (x2+1)2\displaystyle (x^2+1)^2: 2x\displaystyle 2x is not a number, and it cannot be taken out of the differentiation. Here, expand the brackets:

∫(x2+1)2 dx=∫(x4+2x2+1)dx=x55+2x33+x+C\int(x^2+1)^2\,dx=\int\left(x^4+2x^2+1\right)dx=\frac{x^5}{5}+\frac{2x^3}{3}+x+C
