Integrals of negative powers and of roots

Integrals of negative powers and of roots

A negative power

The rule ∫xn dx=xn+1n+1+C\displaystyle {\int x^n\,dx}={\frac{x^{n+1}}{n+1}+C} holds for every n≠−1\displaystyle n\neq-1, negative too. To use it, write a fraction with x\displaystyle x in the denominator as a negative power: 1xn=x−n\displaystyle {\frac{1}{x^n}}={x^{-n}}. The example below finds ∫1x2 dx\displaystyle \int\frac{1}{x^2}\,dx:

∫1x2 dx=∫x−2 dx=x−1−1+C=−1x+C\int\frac{1}{x^2}\,dx=\int x^{-2}\,dx=\frac{x^{-1}}{-1}+C=-\frac{1}{x}+C
  • The check: (−1x)′=1x2\displaystyle {\left(-\frac{1}{x}\right)'}={\frac{1}{x^2}}.
  • The function is defined only where x≠0\displaystyle x\neq0.
  • n=−1\displaystyle {n}={-1}, that is 1x\displaystyle \frac{1}{x}, is the exception: the denominator n+1\displaystyle n+1 would be 0. You will learn its integral in grade 12.
∫1x2 dx=−1x+C\displaystyle \int\frac{1}{x^{2}}\,dx=-\frac{1}{x}+C
A root

In grade 10 you learnt that x=x12\displaystyle {\sqrt{x}}={x^{\frac{1}{2}}}. The same power rule gives the integrals of roots:

∫x dx=∫x12 dx=x3232+C=23xx+C\int\sqrt{x}\,dx=\int x^{\frac{1}{2}}\,dx=\frac{x^{\frac{3}{2}}}{\frac{3}{2}}+C=\frac{2}{3}x\sqrt{x}+C∫1x dx=∫x−12 dx=x1212+C=2x+C\int\frac{1}{\sqrt{x}}\,dx=\int x^{-\frac{1}{2}}\,dx=\frac{x^{\frac{1}{2}}}{\frac{1}{2}}+C=2\sqrt{x}+C
  • x32=x⋅x12=xx\displaystyle {x^{\frac{3}{2}}}={x\cdot x^{\frac{1}{2}}}={x\sqrt{x}}.
  • The check: (2x)′=2⋅12x=1x\displaystyle {\left(2\sqrt{x}\right)'}={2\cdot\frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}}={\frac{1}{\sqrt{x}}}.
∫x dx=23xx+C\displaystyle \int\sqrt{x}\,dx=\frac{2}{3}x\sqrt{x}+C
∫1x dx=2x+C\displaystyle \int\frac{1}{\sqrt{x}}\,dx=2\sqrt{x}+C
A fraction: split it into a sum

When the denominator of a fraction is a single term, divide each term of the numerator by it, and you get a sum of powers. The example below finds ∫x3−2x2 dx\displaystyle \int\frac{x^3-2}{x^2}\,dx:

  • x3−2x2=x3x2−2x2=x−2x−2\displaystyle {\frac{x^3-2}{x^2}}={\frac{x^3}{x^2}-\frac{2}{x^2}}={x-2x^{-2}}.
  • ∫(x−2x−2)dx=x22−2⋅x−1−1+C=x22+2x+C\displaystyle {\int\left(x-2x^{-2}\right)dx}={\frac{x^2}{2}-2\cdot\frac{x^{-1}}{-1}+C}={\frac{x^2}{2}+\frac{2}{x}+C}.

In the same way, x+1x=xx+1x=x+1x\displaystyle {\frac{x+1}{\sqrt{x}}}={\frac{x}{\sqrt{x}}+\frac{1}{\sqrt{x}}}={\sqrt{x}+\frac{1}{\sqrt{x}}}, so:

∫x+1x dx=23xx+2x+C\int\frac{x+1}{\sqrt{x}}\,dx=\frac{2}{3}x\sqrt{x}+2\sqrt{x}+C
