Trigonometry, grade 10 (5 units)
Sine, cosine and tangent are functions that repeat themselves: every full turn of the unit circle brings them back to the same value, so they describe any periodic process – a Ferris wheel, the tides, the length of the day – and they also work out the sides and angles of any triangle.Subjects
The topics, in order:
- the trigonometric functions on the unit circle (in radians): winding a number onto the unit circle, degrees and radians, the length of an arc and the area of a sector, sine and cosine, special values, symmetry and period;
- the graphs: sine and cosine, shifts, stretches and squeezes, periodic processes, the tangent function;
- trigonometric equations: basic equations, the general solution and the solutions in an interval, a linear argument, equations solved with identities;
- trigonometry in the plane (in degrees): the right-angled triangle, the area of a triangle by the sine, the law of sines, the law of cosines, and solving problems in geometry.
Each lesson says whether its angles are measured in radians or in degrees.
Two kinds of lessons:
- learning lessons – an explanation, solved examples and a few questions to try;
- practice lessons – questions only.
How the page works: Using a page.
- The unit circle: winding a number onto itLearningThe unit circle and its circumference; a point on the circle for every real number – winding anticlockwise or clockwise; the same point for the numbers t+2πk; which quadrant the point is in. In radians.
- Degrees and radiansLearningMeasuring an angle in radians – the length of the arc it cuts from the unit circle; π radians are 180 degrees; converting between degrees and radians; the length of an arc and the area of a sector. In radians.
- Sine and cosine on the unit circleLearningThe cosine and the sine of a number – the coordinates of its point on the unit circle; the values at the points on the axes; the signs in each quadrant; the range; the identity sin²t+cos²t=1. In radians.
- Special values: π/6, π/4, π/3LearningThe sine and cosine of π/6, π/4 and π/3 from triangles in the unit circle; reflecting these points into the other quadrants; exact values without a calculator. In radians.
- Symmetry and period of sine and cosineLearningThe period 2π; the identities of −t, π−t, π+t and π/2−t from reflections on the unit circle; reducing a large number; simplifying expressions with the identities. In radians.
- The graphs of sine and cosineLearningThe graphs of y=sin x and y=cos x from the unit circle: domain, range, period, zeros, maximum and minimum, even and odd; the cosine as a shift of the sine. In radians.
- Shifts, stretches and squeezes of sine and cosineLearningThe function y=A·sin(ax+b)+B: amplitude, period 2π/|a|, horizontal and vertical shifts, range; finding the function from a graph – as a transformation of sine and as one of cosine. In radians.
- Periodic processesLearningDescribing a periodic process by a function A·sin(ax)+B or A·cos(ax)+B: a Ferris wheel, the tides, a population in a reserve; the period, the greatest and least values; when a given level is reached – an equation in an interval. In radians.
- The tangent functionLearningThe tangent on the line that touches the unit circle at (1,0); tan t = sin t / cos t by similar triangles; special values and signs; the period π; the graph and its asymptotes; the identity 1+tan²t=1/cos²t. In radians.
- Practice: the unit circle and the graphsPracticeRadians, the length of an arc and the area of a sector, exact values, identities, from sine to cosine and tangent, the formula of a graph, the period and a periodic process. In radians.
- Basic trigonometric equationsLearningThe equations sin x=a, cos x=b, tan x=c: when there is a solution, the general solution with k, the inverse functions on the calculator, and the solutions in a given interval. In radians.
- Equations with a linear argumentLearningEquations of the form A·sin(ax+b)+B=0, and likewise with cosine and tangent: the general solution through u=ax+b, dividing k as well, and the number of solutions in an interval – with the graph. In radians.
- Trigonometric equations solved with identitiesLearningsin x = cos x as an equation in the tangent; a quadratic equation in sine or cosine; one function only, through sin²x+cos²x=1; factoring instead of dividing; the equations sin f = sin g and cos f = cos g. In radians.
- Practice: trigonometric equationsPracticeThe general solution and the solutions in an interval, a linear argument, a quadratic in sine, factoring, cos f = cos g, where graphs meet, and an inequality in an interval. In radians.
- The trigonometric functions in a right-angled triangleLearningThe unit circle and the ratios of the sides in a right-angled triangle; working out a side and an angle; exact and approximate values; the isosceles triangle and a height. In degrees.
- The area of a triangle by the sineLearningS=½ab·sinγ – a proof in an acute and in an obtuse triangle; sin(180°−α)=sin α and two triangles of the same area; the largest area; the area of a parallelogram; an angle from an area. In degrees.
- The law of sinesLearninga/sinα = b/sinβ = c/sinγ = 2R – two proofs: by a height and by the circumscribed circle; a side from two angles and a side; an angle from two sides – when there are two triangles (the fourth congruence theorem); the radius of the circumscribed circle; the area from two angles and a side. In degrees.
- The law of cosinesLearningc²=a²+b²−2ab·cosγ – a proof with coordinates; a side from two sides and the angle between them; an angle from three sides; an acute, right or obtuse angle by the sign; a side not opposite the given angle – a quadratic equation; the diagonals of a parallelogram. In degrees.
- Solving geometry problems with trigonometryLearningCutting a shape into triangles and choosing the law; a regular polygon inscribed in a circle; an expression with a parameter and its largest value; data that contradict each other; proving the angle bisector theorem with the area formula. In degrees.
- Practice: trigonometry in the planePracticeThe area of a triangle and a parallelogram, the law of sines and the law of cosines, two triangles from the same data, the distance of a boat from the shore, the radius of the circumscribed circle. In degrees.
- Review: trigonometryPracticeQuestions from the whole course: exact values and identities, the formula of a graph, equations – the general solution and the solutions in an interval, area, the law of sines and the law of cosines, and a triangle with sinα=sinβ. Questions 1–4 in radians, 5–6 in degrees.
