The graphs of sine and cosine

The graphs of sine and cosine

The graph of sine

As the point P(x)\displaystyle P(x) goes round the unit circle, its height is sin⁡x\displaystyle \sin x. On the graph, x\displaystyle x is on the horizontal axis and the height sin⁡x\displaystyle \sin x on the upright one. The x\displaystyle x-axis is marked in multiples of π\displaystyle \pi.

f(x)=sin⁡x\displaystyle f(x)=\sin x

The properties of y=sin⁡x\displaystyle {y}={\sin x}:

  • domain: every x\displaystyle x; range: −1≤y≤1\displaystyle -1\leq y\leq1;
  • period 2π\displaystyle 2\pi: the graph repeats itself every 2π\displaystyle 2\pi;
  • zeros: x=πk\displaystyle {x}={\pi k};
  • maximum 1\displaystyle 1 at x=π2+2πk\displaystyle {x}={\frac{\pi}{2}+2\pi k}, minimum −1\displaystyle -1 at x=3π2+2πk\displaystyle {x}={\frac{3\pi}{2}+2\pi k};
  • an odd function: sin⁡(−x)=−sin⁡x\displaystyle {\sin(-x)}={-\sin x}, and the graph is symmetric about the origin.

(k\displaystyle k is an integer, as everywhere in the course.)

The graph of cosine

On the board: g(x)=cos⁡x\displaystyle {g(x)}={\cos x}, and dashed – f(x)=sin⁡x\displaystyle {f(x)}={\sin x}. The cosine’s graph has the same shape, shifted:

cos⁡x\displaystyle \cos x =\displaystyle = sin⁡(x+π2)\displaystyle \sin\left(x+\frac{\pi}{2}\right)

because sin⁡(x+π2)=sin⁡(π−(π2−x))=sin⁡(π2−x)=cos⁡x\displaystyle {\sin\left(x+\frac{\pi}{2}\right)}={\sin\left(\pi-\left(\frac{\pi}{2}-x\right)\right)}={\sin\left(\frac{\pi}{2}-x\right)}={\cos x}. So the graph of cos⁡x\displaystyle \cos x is the graph of sin⁡x\displaystyle \sin x shifted π2\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{2} to the left.

f(x)=sin⁡x\displaystyle f(x)=\sin x
g(x)=cos⁡x\displaystyle g(x)=\cos x

The properties of y=cos⁡x\displaystyle {y}={\cos x}:

  • domain: every x\displaystyle x; range: −1≤y≤1\displaystyle -1\leq y\leq1; period 2π\displaystyle 2\pi;
  • zeros: x=π2+πk\displaystyle {x}={\frac{\pi}{2}+\pi k};
  • maximum 1\displaystyle 1 at x=2πk\displaystyle {x}={2\pi k}, minimum −1\displaystyle -1 at x=π+2πk\displaystyle {x}={\pi+2\pi k};
  • an even function: cos⁡(−x)=cos⁡x\displaystyle {\cos(-x)}={\cos x}, and the graph is symmetric about the y\displaystyle y-axis.
Exercise 1

Mark on the board all the zeros of f(x)=sin⁡x\displaystyle {f(x)}={\sin x} and all its extremum points in the part shown.

f(x)=sin⁡x\displaystyle f(x)=\sin x

Exercise 2

Solve with the help of the graphs.

        At these points sin⁡x=cos⁡x\displaystyle {\sin x}={\cos x} – which points of the unit circle are they?

        f(x)=sin⁡x\displaystyle f(x)=\sin x
        g(x)=cos⁡x\displaystyle g(x)=\cos x

        Exercise 4

          Exercise 5

          Write where y=sin⁡x\displaystyle {y}={\sin x} increases and where it decreases between 0\displaystyle 0 and 2π\displaystyle 2\pi.
