Shifts, stretches and squeezes of sine and cosine
Shifts, stretches and squeezes of sine and cosine
Each number in the function changes the graph of in a different way:
- – a vertical shift: units up ( – down). The graph swings about the line .
- – a vertical stretch: the height above and below it grows times. The number is the amplitude. When the graph is also reflected.
- – a horizontal squeeze by : a full turn of ends already after . This is the period:
- – a horizontal shift: , so the graph moves to the left ( – to the right).
The range: . The very same rules hold for .
The example below reads the properties of from the formula. On the board: , and dashed – .
- : the graph swings about .
- : the amplitude is 2, so the range is .
- : the period is .
- : a shift of to the right.
On the board: the graph of a function of the form , with a maximum point and the minimum point after it. The example below finds its formula from these points.
- – the middle of the range: .
- The amplitude – half the height of the range: .
- From the maximum to the minimum is half a period: , so the period is and .
The shift is left to find. It has more than one answer:
- as a sine: reaches its maximum when its argument is . At : – no shift is needed, .
- as a cosine: reaches its maximum when its argument is , so the graph is shifted to the right: .
Both formulas describe the same graph, because .
The function is .
Mark on the board its maximum and minimum points in the part shown.
Write the amplitude, the period and the range of , and how they show in the points you marked.
On each board – the graph of one transformation of or of .
Write its formula on the board.
Write two formulas for the graph on the board: one as a transformation of , and one as a transformation of .
The period of () is .
Solve the equation to find .
