Special values: π/6, π/4, π/3

Special values: π/6, π/4, π/3

The angle π4\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{4}

π4\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{4} is halfway from (1,0)\displaystyle (1,0) to (0,1)\displaystyle (0,1), so the point P(π4)\displaystyle P\left(\frac{\pi}{4}\right) is on the line y=x\displaystyle {y}={x}: its two coordinates are equal. Substitute x=y\displaystyle {x}={y} in the circle’s equation:

  • x2+x2=1\displaystyle {x^2+x^2}={1}, that is x2=12\displaystyle {x^2}={\frac{1}{2}};
  • in the first quadrant x>0\displaystyle x>0, so x=12=22\displaystyle {x}={\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}}={\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}}.
sin⁡π4=cos⁡π4=22\displaystyle \sin\frac{\pi}{4}=\cos\frac{\pi}{4}=\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}
The angles π6\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{6} and π3\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{3}

The points P(π6)\displaystyle P\left(\frac{\pi}{6}\right) and P(−π6)\displaystyle P\left(-\frac{\pi}{6}\right) are symmetric about the x\displaystyle x-axis. With the origin O\displaystyle O they are the vertices of a triangle:

  • two of its sides are radii, of length 1;
  • the angle between them is π6+π6=π3\displaystyle {\frac{\pi}{6}+\frac{\pi}{6}}={\frac{\pi}{3}}, that is 60∘\displaystyle 60^{\circ};
  • so it is an equilateral triangle, and the third side – the upright segment between the two points – is of length 1 too.

The x\displaystyle x-axis cuts this segment in half, so sin⁡π6=12\displaystyle {\sin\frac{\pi}{6}}={\frac{1}{2}}. From the basic identity, cos⁡π6=1−14=32\displaystyle {\cos\frac{\pi}{6}}={\sqrt{1-\frac{1}{4}}}={\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}}.

The point P(π3)\displaystyle P\left(\frac{\pi}{3}\right) is the reflection of P(π6)\displaystyle P\left(\frac{\pi}{6}\right) in the line y=x\displaystyle {y}={x}, so the two coordinates swap: cos⁡π3=12\displaystyle {\cos\frac{\pi}{3}}={\frac{1}{2}}, sin⁡π3=32\displaystyle {\sin\frac{\pi}{3}}={\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}}.

The table of values
t\displaystyle t0\displaystyle 0π6\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{6}π4\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{4}π3\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{3}π2\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{2}
sin⁡t\displaystyle \sin t0\displaystyle 012\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}22\displaystyle \frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}32\displaystyle \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}1\displaystyle 1
cos⁡t\displaystyle \cos t1\displaystyle 132\displaystyle \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}22\displaystyle \frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}12\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}0\displaystyle 0

Along the sine row the values grow, and the cosine row is the same row in reverse.

Reflections into the other quadrants

On the board: A=P(π6)\displaystyle {A}={P\left(\frac{\pi}{6}\right)} and its three reflections.

  • B=P(5π6)\displaystyle {B}={P\left(\frac{5\pi}{6}\right)} – the reflection in the y\displaystyle y-axis: 5π6=π−π6\displaystyle {\frac{5\pi}{6}}={\pi-\frac{\pi}{6}};
  • C=P(7π6)\displaystyle {C}={P\left(\frac{7\pi}{6}\right)} – the reflection in the origin: 7π6=π+π6\displaystyle {\frac{7\pi}{6}}={\pi+\frac{\pi}{6}};
  • D=P(11π6)\displaystyle {D}={P\left(\frac{11\pi}{6}\right)} – the reflection in the x\displaystyle x-axis: 11π6=2π−π6\displaystyle {\frac{11\pi}{6}}={2\pi-\frac{\pi}{6}}.
x2+y2=1\displaystyle x^{2}+y^{2}=1
A=(32,12)\displaystyle A=(\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2},\frac{1}{2})
B=(−32,12)\displaystyle B=(-\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2},\frac{1}{2})
C=(−32,−12)\displaystyle C=(-\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2},-\frac{1}{2})
D=(32,−12)\displaystyle D=(\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2},-\frac{1}{2})

All four points have the same coordinates in absolute value, 32\displaystyle \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} and 12\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}. Only the signs change, by the quadrant:

  • sin⁡5π6=12\displaystyle {\sin\frac{5\pi}{6}}={\frac{1}{2}}, cos⁡5π6=−32\displaystyle {\cos\frac{5\pi}{6}}={-\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}};
  • sin⁡7π6=−12\displaystyle {\sin\frac{7\pi}{6}}={-\frac{1}{2}}, cos⁡7π6=−32\displaystyle {\cos\frac{7\pi}{6}}={-\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}};
  • sin⁡11π6=−12\displaystyle {\sin\frac{11\pi}{6}}={-\frac{1}{2}}, cos⁡11π6=32\displaystyle {\cos\frac{11\pi}{6}}={\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}}.
An exact value in two steps

To find an exact value of sin⁡t\displaystyle \sin t or cos⁡t\displaystyle \cos t:

  • write t\displaystyle t as π−α\displaystyle \pi-\alpha, π+α\displaystyle \pi+\alpha or 2π−α\displaystyle 2\pi-\alpha, where α\displaystyle \alpha is π6\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{6}, π4\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{4} or π3\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{3} – the value in absolute value is the value at α\displaystyle \alpha;
  • fix the sign by the quadrant of P(t)\displaystyle P(t).

For example, 3π4=π−π4\displaystyle {\frac{3\pi}{4}}={\pi-\frac{\pi}{4}}, and P(3π4)\displaystyle P\left(\frac{3\pi}{4}\right) is in the second quadrant, so cos⁡3π4=−22\displaystyle {\cos\frac{3\pi}{4}}={-\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}}.
