The tangent function

The tangent function

The tangent, defined on a line

The line x=1\displaystyle {x}={1} touches the unit circle at the point (1,0)\displaystyle (1,0): it is a tangent to the circle. The ray from the origin through P(t)\displaystyle P(t), extended, meets the tangent at a point T\displaystyle T.

The tangent of t\displaystyle t, tan⁡t\displaystyle \tan t, is the y\displaystyle y-coordinate of T\displaystyle T.

On the board: the unit circle, the tangent line x=1\displaystyle {x}={1}, P=P(0.9)\displaystyle {P}={P(0.9)}, and the ray through it to T\displaystyle T. When the point P\displaystyle P is on the y\displaystyle y-axis, that is t=π2+πk\displaystyle {t}={\frac{\pi}{2}+\pi k}, the ray is parallel to the tangent line and does not meet it: there t\displaystyle t has no tangent.

x2+y2=1\displaystyle x^{2}+y^{2}=1
x=1\displaystyle x=1
y=tan⁡0.9⋅x\displaystyle y=\tan0.9\cdot x
P=(cos⁡0.9,sin⁡0.9)\displaystyle P=(\cos0.9,\sin0.9)
T=(1,tan⁡0.9)\displaystyle T=(1,\tan0.9)
Q=(cos⁡0.9,0)\displaystyle Q=(\cos0.9,0)
Tangent as a quotient

The triangles OQP\displaystyle OQP and O(1,0)T\displaystyle O(1,0)T on the board are similar: both have a right angle and share the angle at O\displaystyle O. So their sides are in the same ratio:

  • in OQP\displaystyle OQP: the upright leg sin⁡t\displaystyle \sin t and the level leg cos⁡t\displaystyle \cos t;
  • in O(1,0)T\displaystyle O(1,0)T: the upright leg tan⁡t\displaystyle \tan t and the level leg 1\displaystyle 1.
tan⁡t\displaystyle \tan t =\displaystyle = sin⁡tcos⁡t\displaystyle \frac{\sin t}{\cos t}

The equality holds in every quadrant, for every t\displaystyle t with cos⁡t≠0\displaystyle \cos t\neq0.

Values, signs and period

From the quotient and the table of values:

t\displaystyle t0\displaystyle 0π6\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{6}π4\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{4}π3\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{3}
tan⁡t\displaystyle \tan t0\displaystyle 033\displaystyle \frac{\sqrt{3}}{3}1\displaystyle 13\displaystyle \sqrt{3}
  • The sign: the tangent is positive in the first and third quadrants (sine and cosine have the same sign), and negative in the second and fourth.
  • P(t+π)\displaystyle P(t+\pi) is the reflection of P(t)\displaystyle P(t) in the origin: the same ray, the same point T\displaystyle T. So the period of the tangent is π\displaystyle \pi: tan⁡(t+π)=tan⁡t\displaystyle {\tan(t+\pi)}={\tan t}.
  • tan⁡(−t)=−sin⁡tcos⁡t=−tan⁡t\displaystyle {\tan(-t)}={\frac{-\sin t}{\cos t}}={-\tan t}: the tangent is an odd function.
The graph of tangent

On the board: y=tan⁡x\displaystyle {y}={\tan x}, and the dashed lines x=±π2\displaystyle {x}={\pm\frac{\pi}{2}}, x=±3π2\displaystyle {x}={\pm\frac{3\pi}{2}}.

f(x)=tan⁡x\displaystyle f(x)=\tan x
x=−3π2\displaystyle x=-\frac{3\pi}{2}
x=−π2\displaystyle x=-\frac{\pi}{2}
x=π2\displaystyle x=\frac{\pi}{2}
x=3π2\displaystyle x=\frac{3\pi}{2}
  • Domain: x≠π2+πk\displaystyle x\neq\frac{\pi}{2}+\pi k; range: every number.
  • As x\displaystyle x comes close to π2\displaystyle \frac{\pi}{2} from the left, cos⁡x\displaystyle \cos x is close to 0\displaystyle 0 and positive, and tan⁡x\displaystyle \tan x grows without limit; from the right – it falls without limit. The line x=π2\displaystyle {x}={\frac{\pi}{2}} is a vertical asymptote, and after it – every π\displaystyle \pi – another one.
  • Between two asymptotes the graph rises all the time.
  • Zeros: x=πk\displaystyle {x}={\pi k}.
One more identity

Divide both sides of sin⁡2t+cos⁡2t=1\displaystyle {\sin^2t+\cos^2t}={1} by cos⁡2t\displaystyle \cos^2t (where cos⁡t≠0\displaystyle \cos t\neq0):

1+tan⁡2t\displaystyle 1+\tan^2t =\displaystyle = 1cos⁡2t\displaystyle \frac{1}{\cos^2t}

With it you go from the tangent to the cosine. For example, if tan⁡t=34\displaystyle {\tan t}={\frac{3}{4}} and P(t)\displaystyle P(t) is in the first quadrant: 1cos⁡2t=1+916=2516\displaystyle {\frac{1}{\cos^2t}}={1+\frac{9}{16}}={\frac{25}{16}}, so cos⁡t=45\displaystyle {\cos t}={\frac{4}{5}} and sin⁡t=tan⁡t⋅cos⁡t=35\displaystyle {\sin t}={\tan t\cdot\cos t}={\frac{3}{5}}.
