Trigonometry, grade 11 (5 units)
Identities that link different angles, and what they let you do: work out exact values, simplify expressions, solve equations and solve problems in triangles and solids.Subjects
The course builds on the trigonometry of grade 10: the unit circle, radians, the graphs, the basic identities, basic equations, the law of sines and the law of cosines. The topics, in order:
- a recap of grade 10: the unit circle and the basic identities, basic equations;
- identities: the cosine and the sine of a difference and of a sum, the double angle, sums and differences of sines and of cosines, proving identities;
- trigonometric equations: with the identities, with a product, in a given interval;
- trigonometry in a triangle: the law of sines with the circumscribed circle’s radius, the law of cosines, the area, identities in a triangle, problems with a parameter;
- trigonometry in solids: the right prism, the right pyramid, the cylinder, the cone and the sphere.
There are two kinds of lessons:
- learning lessons – an explanation, worked examples and a few questions to try;
- practice lessons – questions only.

- Recap: the unit circle and the basic identitiesLearningWhat grade 10 taught: radians, the exact values, the identities of opposite angles, of angles adding up to $\pi$ and to $\frac{\pi}{2}$, and $\sin^2\alpha+\cos^2\alpha=1$.
- Recap: basic trigonometric equationsLearningThe general solution of $\sin x=a$, $\cos x=a$ and $\tan x=a$; equations of the form $\sin f(x)=\sin g(x)$ and $\cos f(x)=\cos g(x)$; solutions in degrees and with an inverse function.
- The cosine and the sine of a sum and of a differenceLearningA proof of $\cos(\alpha-\beta)$ on the unit circle, and from it the other three formulas; exact values such as $\cos15^\circ$ and $\sin\frac{7\pi}{12}$.
- Using the sum and difference formulasLearning$\sin(\alpha+\beta)$ from facts about $\alpha$ and $\beta$ in different quadrants, the tangent of a sum, and writing $a\sin x+b\cos x$ as one sine.
- The double angleLearning$\sin2\alpha$, the three forms of $\cos2\alpha$ and $\tan2\alpha$ from the sum formulas; lowering a power: $\cos^2\alpha=\frac{1+\cos2\alpha}{2}$; values of a half angle and $\sin3x$.
- Sums and differences of sines and of cosinesLearningThe four formulas that turn a sum into a product, from the sum and difference formulas; exact values and simplifying fractions such as $\frac{\sin3x+\sin x}{\cos3x+\cos x}$.
- Proving identitiesLearningAn identity holds for every $x$ where both sides are defined; it is proved by a chain of equalities from one side to the other, with a few ways to start: everything in sines and cosines, a common denominator, multiplying by the conjugate, the double angle.
- Practice: trigonometric identitiesPracticeExact values, working from facts about the angles, writing as one sine and proving identities.
- Equations with identitiesLearningA quadratic equation in $\sin x$ or $\cos x$, the double angle and factorising (never dividing by an expression that may be 0), a homogeneous equation that turns into one in $\tan x$, and $a\sin x+b\cos x=c$.
- Equations with a sum turned into a productLearningA sum of sines or of cosines turned into a product equal to 0; a factor common to both sides; going from $\sin$ to $\cos$ with $\frac{\pi}{2}-x$.
- Solutions in a given intervalLearningFrom the general solution to the solutions in an interval – putting in values of $k$; solutions in degrees; where $\tan x$ is defined; squaring adds solutions.
- Practice: trigonometric equationsPracticeBasic equations, quadratics in $\sin x$ and $\cos x$, homogeneous ones, a sum turned into a product, one sine, and solutions in an interval.
- Recap: the law of sines and the law of cosinesLearningWhat grade 10 taught: the law of sines with the circumscribed circle's radius, the law of cosines, the area of a triangle; which law suits which facts, and a case of two triangles.
- Identities in a triangle and proving claimsLearning$\alpha+\beta+\gamma=180^\circ$ gives $\sin(\alpha+\beta)=\sin\gamma$; a proof of the area formula $S=\frac{a^2\sin\beta\sin\gamma}{2\sin(\beta+\gamma)}$; an isosceles triangle from an equality of sines; $AD=BD+CD$ in an equilateral triangle inscribed in a circle.
- Geometry problems with a parameterLearningLengths with a letter and an angle: an angle bisector from areas, an isosceles triangle by its leg and apex angle; a trigonometric equation that gives the angles of a triangle.
- Trigonometry in solidsLearningThe angle between a line and a plane; right-angled triangles in a box, a right pyramid, a cone, a cylinder and a sphere; lengths, areas and volumes.
- Practice: trigonometry in triangles and solidsPracticeThe law of sines and the law of cosines, the area, a chord in a circle, a parallelogram, a pyramid and a cone.
- ReviewPracticeQuestions from the whole course: exact values, identities, equations, solutions in an interval, a triangle.
