Sums and differences of sines and of cosines

Sums and differences of sines and of cosines

From a sum to a product

A product is handier than a sum: it can be cancelled in a fraction, and a product is 0 only when one of its factors is 0. The formulas here turn a sum of sines or of cosines into a product.

Add sin⁡(u+v)=sin⁡ucos⁡v+cos⁡usin⁡v\displaystyle {\sin(u+v)}={\sin u\cos v+\cos u\sin v} and sin⁡(u−v)=sin⁡ucos⁡v−cos⁡usin⁡v\displaystyle {\sin(u-v)}={\sin u\cos v-\cos u\sin v}:

sin⁡(u+v)+sin⁡(u−v)=2sin⁡ucos⁡v\sin(u+v)+\sin(u-v)=2\sin u\cos v

Let α=u+v\displaystyle {\alpha}={u+v} and β=u−v\displaystyle {\beta}={u-v}. Then u=α+β2\displaystyle {u}={\frac{\alpha+\beta}{2}} and v=α−β2\displaystyle {v}={\frac{\alpha-\beta}{2}}, and the first formula follows. The other three come out the same way:

sin⁡α+sin⁡β\displaystyle \sin\alpha+\sin\beta =\displaystyle = 2sin⁡α+β2⋅cos⁡α−β2\displaystyle 2\sin\frac{\alpha+\beta}{2}\cdot\cos\frac{\alpha-\beta}{2}
sin⁡α−sin⁡β\displaystyle \sin\alpha-\sin\beta =\displaystyle = 2sin⁡α−β2⋅cos⁡α+β2\displaystyle 2\sin\frac{\alpha-\beta}{2}\cdot\cos\frac{\alpha+\beta}{2}
cos⁡α+cos⁡β\displaystyle \cos\alpha+\cos\beta =\displaystyle = 2cos⁡α+β2⋅cos⁡α−β2\displaystyle 2\cos\frac{\alpha+\beta}{2}\cdot\cos\frac{\alpha-\beta}{2}
cos⁡α−cos⁡β\displaystyle \cos\alpha-\cos\beta =\displaystyle = −2sin⁡α+β2⋅sin⁡α−β2\displaystyle -2\sin\frac{\alpha+\beta}{2}\cdot\sin\frac{\alpha-\beta}{2}

Every formula holds half the sum and half the difference of the angles. Mind the minus in the difference of cosines.

Exact values
  • sin⁡75∘+sin⁡15∘=2sin⁡45∘cos⁡30∘=2⋅22⋅32=62\displaystyle {\sin75^\circ+\sin15^\circ}={2\sin45^\circ\cos30^\circ}={2\cdot\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\cdot\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}}={\frac{\sqrt{6}}{2}}.
  • cos⁡75∘−cos⁡15∘=−2sin⁡45∘sin⁡30∘=−22\displaystyle {\cos75^\circ-\cos15^\circ}={-2\sin45^\circ\sin30^\circ}={-\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}}.

Neither of the angles 75∘\displaystyle 75^\circ, 15∘\displaystyle 15^\circ is in the table, but half their sum and half their difference are.

Cancelling a fraction

When both the numerator and the denominator are sums, turning them into products shows a common factor:

sin⁡5x−sin⁡3xcos⁡5x+cos⁡3x=2sin⁡xcos⁡4x2cos⁡4xcos⁡x=tan⁡x\frac{\sin5x-\sin3x}{\cos5x+\cos3x}=\frac{2\sin x\cos4x}{2\cos4x\cos x}=\tan x

Cancelling cos⁡4x\displaystyle \cos4x is allowed only when cos⁡4x≠0\displaystyle \cos4x\neq0 – which is also where the original expression is defined.
