Vectors, grade 12 (5 units)

A vector is a quantity with a direction: a displacement, a force, a velocity.Subjects

In this course you learn to calculate with vectors, to prove theorems of geometry with them, and to describe lines and planes in space with them. The course builds on the geometry and trigonometry of grades 10 and 11 (5 units): Pythagoras’ theorem, similar triangles, the law of sines and the law of cosines. The topics, in order:

  • solids and angles in space: lines and planes and their relative positions, the angle between a line and a plane and between two planes, the prism, the pyramid, the cylinder, the cone and the sphere, and calculations in solids with trigonometry;
  • vectors in the geometric approach: adding, subtracting and multiplying by a scalar, linear combinations and dividing a segment in a given ratio, linear dependence and the uniqueness of a representation, and proofs;
  • the scalar product: lengths, angles, perpendicularity and proofs;
  • vectors in coordinates: axes in space, the parametric form of a line, a plane in parametric form and by an equation, and their relative positions;
  • distances and angles: between a point, a line and a plane, with vector tools and with trigonometric tools.

There are two kinds of lessons:

  • learning lessons – an explanation, worked examples and a few exercises to try;
  • practice lessons – questions only.
