Units of length, weight and money

Units of length, weight and money

A measure

A measure is a number and a unit: 4 m, 400 cm, 2.5 kg. A length of 4 m and a length of 400 cm are the same length – the numbers differ because the units differ.

Units of length, weight and money
  • Length: 1 cm = 10 mm; 1 m = 100 cm = 1000 mm; 1 km = 1000 m.
  • Weight: 1 kg = 1000 g; 1 ton = 1000 kg.
  • Money: 1 ₪ = 100 agorot.
A bigger unit, a smaller number
The ratio of a metre to a centimetre is 100:1\displaystyle 100:1.

The room is 400 cm long, or 4 m. A metre is 100 times bigger than a centimetre, so the number of metres is 100 times smaller than the number of centimetres. The bigger the unit, the smaller the number:

  • to a smaller unit – multiply: 4 m =4×100=400\displaystyle {}={4\times100}={400} cm;
  • to a bigger unit – divide: 400 cm =400:100=4\displaystyle {}={400:100}={4} m.
Converting units in decimals

Decimals are multiplied and divided by 10, 100 and 1000 too:

  • 2.5 m =2.5×100=250\displaystyle {}={2.5\times100}={250} cm;
  • 750 g =750:1000=0.75\displaystyle {}={750:1000}={0.75} kg;
  • 3 m and 7 cm: 7 cm are 7:100=0.07\displaystyle {7:100}={0.07} m, so together 3.07 m;
  • 1 ₪ and 5 agorot are 1.05 ₪.
