Multiplying and dividing signed numbers

Multiplying and dividing signed numbers

Signed numbers are multiplied and divided just like numbers without a sign. The only question is the sign of the result – and why it comes out that way.

Positive times negative
Positive times negative – negative.

Multiplication is repeated addition: 3⋅(−4)=(−4)+(−4)+(−4)=−12\displaystyle {3\cdot(-4)}={(-4)+(-4)+(-4)}={-12}. Three debts of 4 ₪ are a debt of 12 ₪. And since the order of the factors doesn’t matter, (−4)⋅3=−12\displaystyle {(-4)\cdot3}={-12} too.

Negative times negative
Negative times negative – positive.

Negative times negative is positive. Look at this list: (−4)⋅3=−12\displaystyle {(-4)\cdot3}={-12}, (−4)⋅2=−8\displaystyle {(-4)\cdot2}={-8}, (−4)⋅1=−4\displaystyle {(-4)\cdot1}={-4}, (−4)⋅0=0\displaystyle {(-4)\cdot0}={0}. Each time the second factor goes down by 1, and the product goes up by 4. For the list to go on the same way, (−4)⋅(−1)\displaystyle (-4)\cdot(-1) must be 4\displaystyle 4, and then (−4)⋅(−2)=8\displaystyle {(-4)\cdot(-2)}={8}.

The sign rule

Multiply the numbers without their signs, then decide the sign: the product of two numbers with the same sign is positive, and the product of two numbers with different signs is negative. And any number times 0 is 0.

Exercise 1

Calculate.

        d

/ – fraction bar · Tab or the arrows – between numerator and denominator, then a note above or below · Enter – check and a new line · * – times · ^ – power, ↓ – end of the power

/ – fraction bar · Tab or the arrows – between numerator and denominator, then a note above or below · Enter – a new line · * – times · ^ – power, ↓ – end of the power

          Division
Dividing by 0 is impossible – for a negative number too.

Division is the inverse of multiplication: (−12):4=−3\displaystyle {(-12):4}={-3}, because (−3)⋅4=−12\displaystyle {(-3)\cdot4}={-12}, and (−20):(−5)=4\displaystyle {(-20):(-5)}={4}, because 4⋅(−5)=−20\displaystyle {4\cdot(-5)}={-20}. So division follows the same rule: the same signs – the quotient is positive; different signs – the quotient is negative.

          Exercise 2

Calculate, and check every result by multiplying.

          a

/ – fraction bar · Tab or the arrows – between numerator and denominator, then a note above or below · Enter – check and a new line · * – times · ^ – power, ↓ – end of the power

/ – fraction bar · Tab or the arrows – between numerator and denominator, then a note above or below · Enter – a new line · * – times · ^ – power, ↓ – end of the power

            b

/ – fraction bar · Tab or the arrows – between numerator and denominator, then a note above or below · Enter – check and a new line · * – times · ^ – power, ↓ – end of the power

/ – fraction bar · Tab or the arrows – between numerator and denominator, then a note above or below · Enter – a new line · * – times · ^ – power, ↓ – end of the power

              c

                  A product of several factors
An even number of negative factors – positive; an odd number – negative.

With several factors, every two negative factors together give a positive product. So count the negative factors: (−1)⋅(−2)⋅(−3)⋅(−4)=24\displaystyle {(-1)\cdot(-2)\cdot(-3)\cdot(-4)}={24} – four negative factors, the product is positive; (−1)⋅2⋅(−3)⋅(−4)=−24\displaystyle {(-1)\cdot2\cdot(-3)\cdot(-4)}={-24} – three negative factors, the product is negative.

                  Exercise 3

                  Calculate.
You can multiply two factors in each line, or decide the sign first.

/ – fraction bar · Tab or the arrows – between numerator and denominator, then a note above or below · Enter – a new line · * – times · ^ – power, ↓ – end of the power

                          Fractions and decimals

The very same rule holds for fractions and decimals: (−12)⋅45=−25\displaystyle {\left(-\frac{1}{2}\right)\cdot\frac{4}{5}}={-\frac{2}{5}}, (−0.3)⋅(−2)=0.6\displaystyle {(-0.3)\cdot(-2)}={0.6}.
