The variable

The variable

Sometimes we don’t know a certain number, or it changes from case to case. Then we write a letter in its place – x\displaystyle x, n\displaystyle n, a\displaystyle a or any other letter. A letter that stands for a number is called a variable.

A variable
In 12n\displaystyle 12n there is no multiplication sign: a number written right next to a letter means multiplication.

A box holds 12 pencils. 2 boxes hold 12⋅2=24\displaystyle {12\cdot2}={24} pencils, and 5 boxes hold 12⋅5=60\displaystyle {12\cdot5}={60} pencils. And any number of boxes? If the number of boxes is n\displaystyle n, they hold 12⋅n\displaystyle 12\cdot n pencils, written for short as 12n\displaystyle 12n.

A pattern

We build a row of squares out of matches, each square next to the one before. These are the first three stages:

The first square takes 4 matches, and every further square adds 3 matches: 4, 7, 10, … You can think of it like this: one match stands at the end, and every square adds 3 more. So n\displaystyle n squares take 3n+1\displaystyle 3n+1 matches.

Substitution
When substituting, bring the multiplication sign back: 3n\displaystyle 3n for n=20\displaystyle {n}={20} is 3⋅20\displaystyle 3\cdot20, not 320.

How many matches do 20 squares take? Substitute n=20\displaystyle {n}={20} in the expression 3n+1\displaystyle 3n+1: 3⋅20+1=61\displaystyle {3\cdot20+1}={61}. Writing a number in place of the variable is called substitution.

Exercise 1

How many matches do 10 squares take?
And 100 squares? Calculate.

      Exercise 2

We build a row of triangles out of matches, each triangle sharing a side with the one before: one triangle takes 3 matches, two triangles take 5, and three triangles take 7.
Draw the fourth stage: how many matches does it have?
Write an expression for the number of matches in n\displaystyle n triangles.
