The laws of square roots

The laws of square roots

The laws of square roots let you calculate with roots and write them in a simpler form. A reminder from seventh grade: the square root of a number a≥0\displaystyle a\ge0 is the number, positive or 0, whose square is a\displaystyle a.

  • 49=7\displaystyle {\sqrt{49}}={7}, since 72=49\displaystyle {7^2}={49}.
  • −4\displaystyle \sqrt{-4} does not exist: the square of any number is positive or 0.
  • Most roots are not whole numbers: 2\displaystyle \sqrt{2} is a little more than 1.41\displaystyle 1.41.
The square of a root and the root of a square
(−3)2=9=3\displaystyle {\sqrt{(-3)^2}}={\sqrt{9}}={3}, not −3\displaystyle -3.

A root squared gives back the number under it:

(a)2\displaystyle \left(\sqrt{a}\right)^2 =\displaystyle = a\displaystyle aa≥0\displaystyle a\ge0
  • (7)2=7\displaystyle {\left(\sqrt{7}\right)^2}={7} – by the definition of the root.
  • The other way round, 52=25=5\displaystyle {\sqrt{5^2}}={\sqrt{25}}={5}. So a2=a\displaystyle {\sqrt{a^2}}={a} when a≥0\displaystyle a\ge0.
  • For a negative number the root of its square is the opposite number: (−5)2=25=5\displaystyle {\sqrt{(-5)^2}}={\sqrt{25}}={5}.
The root of a product
A sum has no such law: 9+16=25=5\displaystyle {\sqrt{9+16}}={\sqrt{25}}={5}, but 9+16=7\displaystyle {\sqrt{9}+\sqrt{16}}={7}.

The root of a product is the product of the roots:

ab\displaystyle \sqrt{ab} =\displaystyle = a⋅b\displaystyle \sqrt{a}\cdot\sqrt{b}a≥0, b≥0\displaystyle a\ge0,\ b\ge0
  • 4⋅9=36=6\displaystyle {\sqrt{4\cdot9}}={\sqrt{36}}={6}, and 4⋅9=2⋅3=6\displaystyle {\sqrt{4}\cdot\sqrt{9}}={2\cdot3}={6}.
  • Why: (a⋅b)2=(a)2⋅(b)2=ab\displaystyle {\left(\sqrt{a}\cdot\sqrt{b}\right)^2}={\left(\sqrt{a}\right)^2\cdot\left(\sqrt{b}\right)^2}={ab} by the law of a power of a product, and a⋅b\displaystyle \sqrt{a}\cdot\sqrt{b} is not negative.
  • Backwards, two roots become one: 2⋅8=16=4\displaystyle {\sqrt{2}\cdot\sqrt{8}}={\sqrt{16}}={4}.
The root of a fraction

The root of a fraction is the root of the numerator over the root of the denominator:

ab\displaystyle \sqrt{\frac{a}{b}} =\displaystyle = ab\displaystyle \frac{\sqrt{a}}{\sqrt{b}}a≥0, b>0\displaystyle a\ge0,\ b>0
  • 925=35\displaystyle {\sqrt{\dfrac{9}{25}}}={\dfrac{3}{5}}
  • Backwards: 502=502=25=5\displaystyle {\dfrac{\sqrt{50}}{\sqrt{2}}}={\sqrt{\dfrac{50}{2}}}={\sqrt{25}}={5}.

                    Simplifying a root
                    23\displaystyle 2\sqrt{3} means 2⋅3\displaystyle 2\cdot\sqrt{3}.

                    A root is simplified by taking a perfect square out from under it:

                    12=4⋅3=4⋅3=23\sqrt{12}=\sqrt{4\cdot3}=\sqrt{4}\cdot\sqrt{3}=2\sqrt{3}
                    • Look for the largest perfect square that divides the number: 50=25⋅2=52\displaystyle {\sqrt{50}}={\sqrt{25\cdot2}}={5\sqrt{2}}.
                    • With a smaller square you are not done yet: 72=4⋅18=218=2⋅32=62\displaystyle {\sqrt{72}}={\sqrt{4\cdot18}}={2\sqrt{18}}={2\cdot3\sqrt{2}}={6\sqrt{2}}. With the largest one, in one step: 72=36⋅2=62\displaystyle {\sqrt{72}}={\sqrt{36\cdot2}}={6\sqrt{2}}.
                    • The perfect squares to look for: 4,9,16,25,36,49,64,81,100\displaystyle 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100.

                              Adding like roots
                              2+3\displaystyle \sqrt{2}+\sqrt{3} is not 5\displaystyle \sqrt{5}: 1.41+1.73=3.14\displaystyle {1.41+1.73}={3.14}, and 5\displaystyle \sqrt{5} is about 2.24\displaystyle 2.24.

                              Roots with the same number under them are added like like terms: 2x+5x=7x\displaystyle {2x+5x}={7x}, and in the same way 23+53=73\displaystyle {2\sqrt{3}+5\sqrt{3}}={7\sqrt{3}}.

                              • 65−5=55\displaystyle {6\sqrt{5}-\sqrt{5}}={5\sqrt{5}}
                              • Different roots stay as they are: 3+5\displaystyle \sqrt{3}+\sqrt{5}.
                              • Sometimes simplifying first makes them like: 12+27=23+33=53\displaystyle {\sqrt{12}+\sqrt{27}}={2\sqrt{3}+3\sqrt{3}}={5\sqrt{3}}.
                              Exercise 3
