The quadratic formula

The quadratic formula

One formula solves every quadratic equation: the quadratic formula. Factoring, or taking a square root (as in x2=9\displaystyle {x^{2}}={9} or (x−1)2=4\displaystyle {(x-1)^{2}}={4}), is quicker when it works. But many trinomials cannot be factored with whole numbers: in x2+2x−4=0\displaystyle {x^{2}+2x-4}={0} no two whole numbers have the product −4\displaystyle -4 and the sum 2\displaystyle 2.

The quadratic formula
First bring the equation to the form ax2+bx+c=0\displaystyle {ax^{2}+bx+c}={0} – everything on one side, 0 on the other.

The solutions of the equation ax2+bx+c=0\displaystyle {ax^{2}+bx+c}={0} (where a≠0\displaystyle a\neq0) are

x1,2\displaystyle x_{1,2} =\displaystyle = −b±b2−4ac2a\displaystyle \frac{-b\pm\sqrt{b^{2}-4ac}}{2a}a≠0\displaystyle a\neq0

The sign ±\displaystyle \pm means two calculations: once with +\displaystyle + and once with −\displaystyle -. Before substituting, write down a\displaystyle a, b\displaystyle b and c\displaystyle c – each with its sign.

Example: a perfect square under the root
b\displaystyle b goes in with its sign: here b=−5\displaystyle {b}={-5}, so −b=5\displaystyle {-b}={5} and b2=(−5)2=25\displaystyle {b^{2}}={(-5)^{2}}={25}, not −25\displaystyle -25.

2x2−5x−3=0\displaystyle {2x^{2}-5x-3}={0}: a=2\displaystyle {a}={2}, b=−5\displaystyle {b}={-5}, c=−3\displaystyle {c}={-3}.

x1,2=5±(−5)2−4⋅2⋅(−3)2⋅2=5±25+244=5±494=5±74 x_{1,2}=\frac{5\pm\sqrt{(-5)^{2}-4\cdot2\cdot(-3)}}{2\cdot2}=\frac{5\pm\sqrt{25+24}}{4}=\frac{5\pm\sqrt{49}}{4}=\frac{5\pm7}{4}

x1=5+74=3\displaystyle {x_{1}}={\frac{5+7}{4}}={3}, x2=5−74=−12\displaystyle {x_{2}}={\frac{5-7}{4}}={-\frac{1}{2}}. Check: 2⋅32−5⋅3−3=18−15−3=0\displaystyle {2\cdot3^{2}-5\cdot3-3}={18-15-3}={0}.

Example: a root to simplify
2a\displaystyle 2a divides the whole numerator – both −b\displaystyle -b and the root.

x2+2x−4=0\displaystyle {x^{2}+2x-4}={0}: a=1\displaystyle {a}={1}, b=2\displaystyle {b}={2}, c=−4\displaystyle {c}={-4}.

x1,2=−2±4+162=−2±202=−2±252=−1±5 x_{1,2}=\frac{-2\pm\sqrt{4+16}}{2}=\frac{-2\pm\sqrt{20}}{2}=\frac{-2\pm2\sqrt{5}}{2}=-1\pm\sqrt{5}

The solutions are x1=−1+5\displaystyle {x_{1}}={-1+\sqrt{5}} and x2=−1−5\displaystyle {x_{2}}={-1-\sqrt{5}}. We simplified 20=4⋅5=25\displaystyle {\sqrt{20}}={\sqrt{4\cdot5}}={2\sqrt{5}}, and divided both terms of the numerator by 2.

Exercise 1

Solve with the quadratic formula.

a
    b
      c
        d
          The number of solutions
          There is no square root of a negative number.

          The number of solutions depends on the expression under the root, b2−4ac\displaystyle b^{2}-4ac:

          • positive – two solutions (−b\displaystyle -b plus the root, and −b\displaystyle -b minus it);
          • zero – one solution, x=−b2a\displaystyle {x}={\frac{-b}{2a}}: x2−6x+9=0\displaystyle {x^{2}-6x+9}={0} gives 36−36=0\displaystyle {36-36}={0}, and x=62=3\displaystyle {x}={\frac{6}{2}}={3};
          • negative – no solution: x2+x+5=0\displaystyle {x^{2}+x+5}={0} gives 1−20=−19\displaystyle {1-20}={-19}.

          In the graph of y=ax2+bx+c\displaystyle {y}={ax^{2}+bx+c} the solutions are where it meets the x\displaystyle x-axis. Here y=x2−4x+3\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}-4x+3} (under the root 16−12=4\displaystyle {16-12}={4}) meets it twice, at 1 and at 3, and y=x2−4x+5\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}-4x+5} (dashed; under the root 16−20=−4\displaystyle {16-20}={-4}) not at all. With zero under the root the vertex is on the x\displaystyle x-axis.

          y=x2−4x+3\displaystyle y=x^{2}-4x+3
          y=x2−4x+5\displaystyle y=x^{2}-4x+5
          (1,0)\displaystyle (1,0)
          (3,0)\displaystyle (3,0)
          Exercise 2

          Without solving: calculate b2−4ac\displaystyle b^{2}-4ac, and write how many solutions the equation has.

          x2+4x+5=0\displaystyle {x^{2}+4x+5}={0}

          b2−4ac\displaystyle b^{2}-4ac

                      Choosing the shortest way

                      The formula always works, but it is not always the shortest way. Look at the equation first:

                      • no x\displaystyle x term: x2=16\displaystyle {x^{2}}={16} – take the root: x=4\displaystyle {x}={4} or x=−4\displaystyle {x}={-4};
                      • no number term: x2−6x=0\displaystyle {x^{2}-6x}={0} – a common factor: x(x−6)=0\displaystyle {x(x-6)}={0}, so x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} or x=6\displaystyle {x}={6};
                      • a trinomial that factors easily: x2−5x+6=0\displaystyle {x^{2}-5x+6}={0} – (x−2)(x−3)=0\displaystyle {(x-2)(x-3)}={0}, so x=2\displaystyle {x}={2} or x=3\displaystyle {x}={3};
                      • otherwise – the formula: 2x2−3x−4=0\displaystyle {2x^{2}-3x-4}={0} gives x1,2=3±9+324=3±414\displaystyle {x_{1,2}}={\frac{3\pm\sqrt{9+32}}{4}}={\frac{3\pm\sqrt{41}}{4}}.
                      Exercise 3

                      Solve each equation in the way that is shortest for it, and write which way you chose.

                        b
                          c

                              e
                                f
                                  Exercise 4

                                  Solve the equation 2x(x−1)=x+5\displaystyle {2x(x-1)}={x+5}.
                                  Bring everything to one side: simplify 2x(x−1)−(x+5)\displaystyle 2x(x-1)-(x+5).
                                  Solve, and check one solution by substitution.
