Quadratic inequalities

A quadratic inequality asks where a function is positive or negative. x2−4>0\displaystyle x^{2}-4>0 asks: for which x\displaystyle x is the function f(x)=x2−4\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^{2}-4} positive – where is its graph above the x\displaystyle x-axis? We already know how to read the positive and negative domains from a graph; here we find them by calculation and a sketch.

Inequalities on the graph

The graph of f(x)=x2−4\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^{2}-4} meets the x\displaystyle x-axis at −2\displaystyle -2 and at 2\displaystyle 2 – its roots, the x\displaystyle x values where f(x)=0\displaystyle {f(x)}={0}.

  • x2−4<0\displaystyle x^{2}-4<0 – the graph is below the axis: −2<x<2\displaystyle -2<x<2.
  • x2−4>0\displaystyle x^{2}-4>0 – the graph is above the axis: x<−2\displaystyle x<-2 or x>2\displaystyle x>2.
  • x2−4≥0\displaystyle x^{2}-4\geq0 – above the axis or on it: x≤−2\displaystyle x\leq-2 or x≥2\displaystyle x\geq2 (the roots are included).
f(x)=x2−4\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}-4

The steps of solving an inequality
Between the roots – one domain: −2<x<2\displaystyle -2<x<2. Outside them – two pieces, joined by “or”: x<−2\displaystyle x<-2 or x>2\displaystyle x>2.
  1. Bring everything to one side, so that the other side is 0.
  2. Find the roots: solve the equation f(x)=0\displaystyle {f(x)}={0}.
  3. Sketch the parabola through the roots: a>0\displaystyle a>0 – it opens upwards, a<0\displaystyle a<0 – downwards.
  4. Read the answer: >0\displaystyle >0 – where the graph is above the axis, <0\displaystyle <0 – where it is below it.
Example: a parabola that opens upwards

x2−5x+6≥0\displaystyle x^{2}-5x+6\geq0.
The roots: (x−2)(x−3)=0\displaystyle {(x-2)(x-3)}={0}, so x=2\displaystyle {x}={2} or x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}. Here a=1>0\displaystyle {a}={1>0}, so the parabola opens upwards: it is below the axis between the roots and above it outside them. The answer: x≤2\displaystyle x\leq2 or x≥3\displaystyle x\geq3.

y=x2−5x+6\displaystyle y=x^{2}-5x+6
(2,0)\displaystyle (2,0)
(3,0)\displaystyle (3,0)
Example: a parabola that opens downwards

−x2+2x+3>0\displaystyle -x^{2}+2x+3>0.
The roots: −x2+2x+3=0\displaystyle {-x^{2}+2x+3}={0}, multiplied by −1\displaystyle -1: x2−2x−3=0\displaystyle {x^{2}-2x-3}={0}, (x−3)(x+1)=0\displaystyle {(x-3)(x+1)}={0}, so x=3\displaystyle {x}={3} or x=−1\displaystyle {x}={-1}. Here a=−1<0\displaystyle {a}={-1<0}, so the parabola opens downwards: it is above the axis between the roots. The answer: −1<x<3\displaystyle -1<x<3.

y=−x2+2x+3\displaystyle y=-x^{2}+2x+3
(−1,0)\displaystyle (-1,0)
(3,0)\displaystyle (3,0)
The inequality x2<4\displaystyle x^{2}<4
Always sketch – the sketch shows the answer.

From x2<4\displaystyle x^{2}<4 it is easy to write “x<2\displaystyle x<2”. But x=−5\displaystyle {x}={-5} satisfies x<2\displaystyle x<2, and (−5)2=25\displaystyle {(-5)^{2}}={25} is not less than 4. The right answer comes from the graph: −2<x<2\displaystyle -2<x<2.

Exercise 1

Here is the graph of f(x)=x2+2x−3\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^{2}+2x-3}.
Find its roots by factoring, and mark them on the graph.
Write for which x\displaystyle x:
a. f(x)<0\displaystyle f(x)<0
b. f(x)≥0\displaystyle f(x)\geq0

f(x)=x2+2x−3\displaystyle f(x)=x^{2}+2x-3

Solve the inequalities: find the roots, sketch the parabola, and read the answer.

          c
            d
              e
An inequality with terms on both sides

When both sides have terms, first bring everything to one side: x2>x+2\displaystyle x^{2}>x+2 becomes x2−x−2>0\displaystyle x^{2}-x-2>0, that is (x−2)(x+1)>0\displaystyle (x-2)(x+1)>0. The parabola opens upwards, so the answer is outside the roots: x<−1\displaystyle x<-1 or x>2\displaystyle x>2.

                Exercise 3

                Solve.

A parabola with one root or none

A parabola that does not cross the x\displaystyle x-axis is all on one side of it.

                    • f(x)=x2+2\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^{2}+2} has no roots and opens upwards, so it is always above the axis: x2+2>0\displaystyle x^{2}+2>0 holds for every x\displaystyle x, and x2+2<0\displaystyle x^{2}+2<0 has no solution.
                    • f(x)=x2−4x+4=(x−2)2\displaystyle {f(x)}={x^{2}-4x+4}={(x-2)^{2}} touches the axis only at its vertex, x=2\displaystyle {x}={2}: (x−2)2>0\displaystyle (x-2)^{2}>0 holds for every x\displaystyle x except 2.
                    Exercise 4

Solve, and explain with a sketch.
                    a. x2+5>0\displaystyle x^{2}+5>0
                    b. x2+5<0\displaystyle x^{2}+5<0
                    c. (x−1)2≤0\displaystyle (x-1)^{2}\leq0
                    d. −x2−1<0\displaystyle -x^{2}-1<0
