Shifting the parabola

Shifting the parabola

Shifting the parabola y=ax2\displaystyle {y}={ax^{2}} gives the parabolas y=a(x−b)2+k\displaystyle {y}={a(x-b)^{2}+k}. The shifts are those of a function’s graph:

  • adding k\displaystyle k moves the parabola up or down;
  • x−b\displaystyle x-b in place of x\displaystyle x moves it right or left.
Vertical shift: y=ax2+k\displaystyle {y}={ax^{2}+k}

The parabola y=x2−4\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}-4} (dashed) is y=x2\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}} moved 4 down. Its vertex is (0,−4)\displaystyle (0,-4).

y=x2\displaystyle y=x^{2}
y=x2−4\displaystyle y=x^{2}-4
A=(−2,0)\displaystyle A=(-2,0)
B=(2,0)\displaystyle B=(2,0)
V=(0,−4)\displaystyle V=(0,-4)

Its intersection points with the x\displaystyle x-axis are where y=0\displaystyle {y}={0}: x2−4=0\displaystyle {x^{2}-4}={0}, so x2=4\displaystyle {x^{2}}={4}, and x=2\displaystyle {x}={2} or x=−2\displaystyle {x}={-2} – the points A(−2,0)\displaystyle A(-2,0) and B(2,0)\displaystyle B(2,0).

Horizontal shift: y=a(x−b)2\displaystyle {y}={a(x-b)^{2}}
y=(x+3)2\displaystyle {y}={(x+3)^{2}} is a shift 3 to the left: its vertex is (−3,0)\displaystyle (-3,0).

The parabola y=(x−3)2\displaystyle {y}={(x-3)^{2}} (dashed) is y=x2\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}} moved 3 to the right. Its vertex is (3,0)\displaystyle (3,0), and its axis of symmetry is the line x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}.

y=x2\displaystyle y=x^{2}
y=(x−3)2\displaystyle y=(x-3)^{2}
V=(3,0)\displaystyle V=(3,0)
The vertex form: y=a(x−b)2+k\displaystyle {y}={a(x-b)^{2}+k}

The parabola y=a(x−b)2+k\displaystyle {y}={a(x-b)^{2}+k} is y=ax2\displaystyle {y}={ax^{2}} moved b\displaystyle b to the right and k\displaystyle k up.

  • Its vertex is (b,k)\displaystyle (b,k), and its axis of symmetry is the line x=b\displaystyle {x}={b}.
  • a>0\displaystyle a>0: the vertex is a minimum point; a<0\displaystyle a<0: a maximum point.

For example, y=(x−1)2−4\displaystyle {y}={(x-1)^{2}-4}: vertex (1,−4)\displaystyle (1,-4), a minimum. y=−(x+2)2+1\displaystyle {y}={-(x+2)^{2}+1}: vertex (−2,1)\displaystyle (-2,1), a maximum.

The properties of y=(x−1)2−4\displaystyle {y}={(x-1)^{2}-4}
(x−1)2=4\displaystyle {(x-1)^{2}}={4} has two solutions: x−1\displaystyle x-1 is 2\displaystyle 2 or −2\displaystyle -2.
  • Vertex V(1,−4)\displaystyle V(1,-4), a minimum point; the minimum value is −4\displaystyle -4.
  • Decreasing for x<1\displaystyle x<1, increasing for x>1\displaystyle x>1.
  • The y\displaystyle y-axis, x=0\displaystyle {x}={0}: y=(0−1)2−4=−3\displaystyle {y}={(0-1)^{2}-4}={-3} – the point C(0,−3)\displaystyle C(0,-3).
  • The x\displaystyle x-axis, y=0\displaystyle {y}={0}: (x−1)2−4=0\displaystyle {(x-1)^{2}-4}={0}, so (x−1)2=4\displaystyle {(x-1)^{2}}={4}; x−1=2\displaystyle {x-1}={2} or x−1=−2\displaystyle {x-1}={-2}; x=3\displaystyle {x}={3} or x=−1\displaystyle {x}={-1} – the points A(−1,0)\displaystyle A(-1,0) and B(3,0)\displaystyle B(3,0).
  • Positive for x<−1\displaystyle x<-1 and for x>3\displaystyle x>3; negative for −1<x<3\displaystyle -1<x<3.
y=(x−1)2−4\displaystyle y=(x-1)^{2}-4
V=(1,−4)\displaystyle V=(1,-4)
A=(−1,0)\displaystyle A=(-1,0)
B=(3,0)\displaystyle B=(3,0)
C=(0,−3)\displaystyle C=(0,-3)
The properties of y=−(x+2)2+1\displaystyle {y}={-(x+2)^{2}+1}
  • Vertex V(−2,1)\displaystyle V(-2,1), a maximum point; the maximum value is 1.
  • Increasing for x<−2\displaystyle x<-2, decreasing for x>−2\displaystyle x>-2.
  • The y\displaystyle y-axis: y=−(0+2)2+1=−3\displaystyle {y}={-(0+2)^{2}+1}={-3} – the point C(0,−3)\displaystyle C(0,-3).
  • The x\displaystyle x-axis: (x+2)2=1\displaystyle {(x+2)^{2}}={1}; x+2=1\displaystyle {x+2}={1} or x+2=−1\displaystyle {x+2}={-1}; x=−1\displaystyle {x}={-1} or x=−3\displaystyle {x}={-3} – the points A(−3,0)\displaystyle A(-3,0), B(−1,0)\displaystyle B(-1,0).
  • Positive for −3<x<−1\displaystyle -3<x<-1; negative for x<−3\displaystyle x<-3 and for x>−1\displaystyle x>-1.
y=−(x+2)2+1\displaystyle y=-(x+2)^{2}+1
V=(−2,1)\displaystyle V=(-2,1)
A=(−3,0)\displaystyle A=(-3,0)
B=(−1,0)\displaystyle B=(-1,0)
C=(0,−3)\displaystyle C=(0,-3)
A parabola above the x\displaystyle x-axis

The parabola y=x2+2\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}+2} has its minimum point (0,2)\displaystyle (0,2) above the x\displaystyle x-axis, so it does not meet the x\displaystyle x-axis: the equation x2+2=0\displaystyle {x^{2}+2}={0}, that is x2=−2\displaystyle {x^{2}}={-2}, has no solution. The same goes for a parabola with a maximum point below the x\displaystyle x-axis.

Exercise 1

For each parabola write: the vertex – minimum or maximum, the axis of symmetry, the increasing and decreasing domains, the intersection points with the axes, the positive and negative domains.
