The function y = ax²

The function y = ax²

A quadratic function has x2\displaystyle x^{2} as its highest power. The simplest one is y=x2\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}}, and its graph is a curve called a parabola.

A table and a graph of y=x2\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}}
A negative number squared is positive: (−3)2=9\displaystyle {(-3)^{2}}={9}.
x\displaystyle x−3\displaystyle -3−2\displaystyle -2−1\displaystyle -10\displaystyle 01\displaystyle 12\displaystyle 23\displaystyle 3
y=x2\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}}9\displaystyle 94\displaystyle 41\displaystyle 10\displaystyle 01\displaystyle 14\displaystyle 49\displaystyle 9

The points of the table, joined by a smooth curve:

y=x2\displaystyle y=x^{2}
(−3,9)\displaystyle (-3,9)
(−2,4)\displaystyle (-2,4)
(−1,1)\displaystyle (-1,1)
(0,0)\displaystyle (0,0)
(1,1)\displaystyle (1,1)
(2,4)\displaystyle (2,4)
(3,9)\displaystyle (3,9)
The vertex and the axis of symmetry
  • The vertex of a parabola is its lowest point (or its highest). The vertex of y=x2\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}} is (0,0)\displaystyle (0,0).
  • The axis of symmetry is the vertical line through the vertex: the two halves of the parabola are mirror images in it. For y=x2\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}} it is the y\displaystyle y-axis, x=0\displaystyle {x}={0} – since x\displaystyle x and −x\displaystyle -x give the same y\displaystyle y: (−3)2=32=9\displaystyle {(-3)^{2}}={3^{2}}={9}.
The sign of a\displaystyle a: minimum or maximum
In y=−x2\displaystyle {y}={-x^{2}} the square comes first, then the minus: at x=3\displaystyle {x}={3}, y=−9\displaystyle {y}={-9}.

In y=ax2\displaystyle {y}={ax^{2}} (a≠0\displaystyle a\neq0), the sign of a\displaystyle a tells which way the parabola opens:

  • a>0\displaystyle a>0: it opens upward, and the vertex is a minimum point – y=x2\displaystyle {y}={x^{2}} (solid), y=2x2\displaystyle {y}={2x^{2}}.
  • a<0\displaystyle a<0: it opens downward, and the vertex is a maximum point – y=−x2\displaystyle {y}={-x^{2}} (dashed).
y=x2\displaystyle y=x^{2}
y=−x2\displaystyle y=-x^{2}
