Percent: the part, the percent and the whole

Percent: the part, the percent and the whole

A percent as a decimal

A percent is a hundredth, so any percent can be written as a decimal:

  • 35%=35100=0.35\displaystyle {35\%}={\frac{35}{100}}={0.35};
  • 8%=0.08\displaystyle {8\%}={0.08};
  • 100%=1\displaystyle {100\%}={1}.

35% of 80 is 35100\displaystyle \frac{35}{100} of 80, and “of” is times: 0.35×80=28\displaystyle {0.35\times80}={28}.

The part, the percent and the whole

A question about percents always has three numbers, and one relation between them:

the part = the percent × the whole

  • The whole – the entire amount: 100% of it.
  • The percent – what part of the whole, in hundredths.
  • The part – the amount that this percent of the whole is.

Two of the three are given, and you find the third. Here are the three questions, about the same class: 30 students, and 12 of them are 40% of the class.

Finding the part

40% of 30 students – how many students is that?
0.4×30=12\displaystyle {0.4\times30}={12}.

Finding the percent

12 out of 30 students – what percent is that?
The part is 1230\displaystyle \frac{12}{30} of the whole; write it in hundredths: 1230=410=40100=40%\displaystyle {\frac{12}{30}}={\frac{4}{10}}={\frac{40}{100}}={40\%}.

Finding the whole
Check: 0.4×30=12\displaystyle {0.4\times30}={12}.

12 students are 40% of the class – how many students are in the class?
The whole is unknown, so call it x\displaystyle x:

0.4x=120.4x=12

Divide by 0.4: x=12:0.4=30\displaystyle {x}={12:0.4}={30}.

What is 15% of 240?

      c
      26 is 40% of what number?
        More than 100%

        100% is the whole, and a percent over 100 is more than the whole.

        • 150%=1.5\displaystyle {150\%}={1.5}, so 150% of 60 is 1.5×60=90\displaystyle {1.5\times60}={90} – one and a half times as much.
        • 200%=2\displaystyle {200\%}={2}: 200% of an amount is twice that amount.
        • Last year a club had 20 children, and this year 25: this year’s number is 2520=1.25=125%\displaystyle {\frac{25}{20}}={1.25}={125\%} of last year’s.
        Exercise 2

        357 students voted.
        How many students are in the school?

          • What percent of the notebook’s price is the book’s price?
          The notebook’s price

              Exercise 4

              On the year group’s annual trip, 45 students chose the short route.
              They are 30% of all the students in the year group.
              How many students chose the other routes?
